Setting up a good earthing system is often overlooked – but it’s a critical part of your electric fence system – equally as important as the wires and even the Energizer. Our Gallagher electric fencing specialist Murray Green was recently on farm with Tim Hallyburton troubleshooting electric fence issues on a number of South West properties.
A major recurring issue hindering fence performance is incorrect ‘earthing’.
The earthing system refers to the galvanized metal stakes that are placed in the earth near the energizer. The metal stakes in the ground are part of the circuit that is completed when the animal touches the wire. The completion of the circuit is what allows the animal to get a shock. The energizer’s earthing system must be as conductive as possible for the fence to give the animal an effective shock.
It’s how the power flows from the energizer, to the fence, through the animal and back through the ground to the energizer. Without good clean earth rods, or ideally, Super Earth Kits, in sufficient size and number, the ground connection doesn’t work and the shock will not reach the animal. Did you know that three or four rods are opitmal – not just one?
And who knew the importance soil moisture plays in effective conductivity within your fencing system? That’s often why your fences are less effective in summer due to our dry conditions.
