In Memory of Tom Duggan

Cowaramup Agencies would like to recognise the life of Tom Duggan who passed away last week at the age of 94.

Tom was a founding partner in Cowaramup Agencies along with Neville Earl, forming an alliance and starting the agricultural business in 1964, some 55 years ago.

Cowaramup Agencies’ business comprised of a small merchandise outlet, situated on the corner of Bottrill St & Bussell Hwy (now Moon Haven). The business mainly supplied into the dairy and beef industry in the region, but the main part of the business was as Livestock Agents for Elders GM (and then Elders)

Tom and his wife, Barbara’s day would start early on the family farm, which is situated just south of Cowaramup, milking cows.  Tom would then spend the best part of the day after that, negotiating the buying and selling cattle, sheep and pigs on behalf a wide range of his clients. Then at the end of the day head home to milk the cows in the evening.

Tom not only had a great rapport with his client base, but was well respected by the Abattoirs and Meat Companies across the state.

The business then moved up to its current location in 1972. In 1978 Cowaramup Agencies joined Wesfarmers and in 1979 Tom sold his share of the business to his nephew Rod.

Tom kept on working as a buyer for some of the large meat works. This would see him travel far and wide buying cattle on behalf these companies, either out of the sale yards or on property. This was while he was running his dairy farm.

Over this time Tom & Barbara increased their land holding, buying adjoining properties, Cravens, Walton’s & Langley’s to the south and Blaikie’s across the road.

Tom hung the boots up as a livestock buyer in the early 90’s and went back and concentrated on the dairy farm, working with his son Peter who still runs the Dairy Farm.

Tom lived all his life in Cowaramup and is survived by his sons Stephen & Peter and daughter Jenny, 9 Grandchildren & 8 Great Grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11am on Saturday 11th May at Pioneer Park, in Cowaramup.
