Questions to ask yourself:

Choosing the right size rainwater tank depends on your specific needs, location, and water usage habits. Asking the following questions will guide you to the ideal tank size:

1. What is Your Water Usage?

  • Household Consumption: Estimate how much water your household uses daily for drinking, washing, laundry, and garden use.
  • Gardening & Irrigation: If you plan to use the water for your garden or crops, consider how much water these activities will require. Larger tanks may be needed for extensive gardens or vineyards.
  • Emergency Supply: Do you want a backup for dry periods or emergencies? If so, consider a larger tank.

2. What Is the Size of Your Roof?

  • The size of your roof dictates how much water you can collect during rainfall. A larger roof can harvest more water, making a bigger tank worthwhile.
  • Use this formula: Roof area (m²) × rainfall (mm) × 0.9 = harvestable litres.
  • For a 100 m² roof in the Margaret River region (average annual rainfall ~812 mm):

    100 × 812 × 0.9 = 73,080 Litres/year

  • You could collect approximately 73,080 litres of rainwater annually from a 100 m² roof in this region, assuming proper collection and storage systems.

3. How Much Space Do You Have?

  • Assess the available space on your property for a tank. Slimline tanks suit urban areas, while rural properties often have room for larger, round tanks.

4. Do You Need Drinking Water or Non-Potable Water?

  • Tanks for potable (drinkable) water should be larger if supplying a household.
  • Non-potable water tanks (e.g., for garden use) can vary based on intended use.

5. Are There Any Regulations or Rebates?

  • New homes in the Augusta-Margaret River Shire are required to install a 2,500L tank.
  • As at November 2024, the Water Corp is offering rebates in some areas for the installation and plumbing in of tanks over 2000L. Please check their website to confirm the offer is still current.

Practical Tip:

Most households find 5,000 to 10,000 litres sufficient for supplementary use, while properties relying solely on rainwater may need 30,000 litres or more.

Here’s an overview to help you choose:

Small to Medium Tanks

Perfect for homes, gardens, or small-scale water storage, these tanks come in capacities ranging from 320 litres to 4,500 litres. Slimline options are ideal for areas where space is limited.

How to Choose the Right Size Tank

To determine the best size for your needs:

  1. Assess Your Water Usage: Consider how much water you’ll need daily, weekly, or seasonally.

  3. Measure Available Space: Ensure the installation site can accommodate the tank you have in mind.

Choosing between a poly (polyethylene) tank and a steel tank depends on your water storage needs, location, and preferences.

Here’s a breakdown of the key differences to help you decide:

Poly Tanks

Poly tanks, like those from Coerco and West Coast Poly, are made from durable, UV-stabilized polyethylene.

Advantages:

  • Cost-Effective: Generally lower in price than steel tanks.
  • Lightweight: Easy to transport and install, even in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Resistant to Corrosion: Ideal for areas with high humidity or salty air, such as coastal regions.
  • Flexibility: Poly tanks are less prone to cracking or denting.
  • Wide Range of Sizes and Styles: Available in capacities from small slimline tanks to large 50,000L round tanks.

    Steel Tanks

Steel tanks, like those from Kingspan, are typically made from high-grade, galvanised or stainless steel.

    Advantages:

    • Strength and Longevity: Steel tanks are exceptionally durable and can last decades with proper care.
    • Aesthetic Appeal: Their sleek, modern appearance often complements homes and properties.
    • Customizable Sizes: Steel tanks can be made to suit specific dimensions and capacities.
    • Fire Resistance: Steel tanks can withstand high temperatures, making them a great choice for bushfire-prone areas.

    Considerations:

    • Higher Cost: Steel tanks are generally more expensive upfront.
    • Corrosion Risk: If not properly maintained, steel tanks may corrode over time, especially in saline environments.
    • Heavier: Installation can require more effort and equipment.

Which Tank Is Right for You?

    • Choose a Poly Tank if you’re looking for affordability, ease of transport, and corrosion resistance.
    • Choose a Steel Tank if durability, fire resistance, or aesthetic appeal are your top priorities.
